Yarm 1914

Killed in action 15 Jul 1915 aged 19. A local Methodist, he was the son of Thomas and Annie Wastell of Danby’s Yard, Yarm. He had been born in Yarm and was living there when he enlisted in the town in Aug 1914. For three years prior to the war he had been a local Terrier and before joining up worked at Hird’s Skinyard where his bright and cheerful disposition was much respected among his fellow workers. Yarm1914 believe that Albert was born on 14 December 1895 in Ratcliffe near Abble in Northumberland the first child of Thomas Joblin Wastell from Yarm and Annie Wastell from Woodside in Durham. In 1901 they had moved to Stainsby's Yard where daughter Alice came along in 1899. In 1915 when he was 15 he lived in a 2 roomed house in Danby wynd in Yarm with his surviving two sisters Hannah E aged 11, Annie Maria aged 6 and two brothers Robert Carter aged 9 and Harry Enoch just born.
